This fast-paced session highlights specific IP rights to be aware of, along with cunning internal practices that can be adopted by smaller tech businesses. Whether you are looking to scale-up or just avoid infringing others rights, this session should increase your awareness of IP in the tech space.

Guest Speaker - Kate Wilson

We're very fortunate to have Kate Wilson come to share her deep expertise.  Check out Kate's imprssive bio below.

Kate's journey in the business world began at the age of 27 when she became a partner in James & Wells, a budding Intellectual Property law firm that she helped transform into New Zealand's leading IP law firm. Her commercial perspective broadened quickly as she served as the liaison between James & Wells and several of New Zealand’s most iconic companies, including Gallagher Group, Zespri, AgResearch, and Bomac. Through her involvement with the IP Business Congress, Kate gained invaluable exposure to the world's top IP advisors and strategists, further enriching her international outlook.

Kate's extensive experience in business extends beyond the realm of intellectual property. She has successfully managed her own non-IP related businesses and has held independent directorships and trustee positions on various boards. Her comprehensive business acumen was nationally recognized in 2023 when she was one of only three inductees into the NZ Hall of Fame for Women Entrepreneurs.

With university degrees in physics and chemistry, Kate is also a registered patent attorney in Australia and New Zealand, providing intellectual property strategies across a diverse range of technological fields. She was the first New Zealander to be included in IAM’s top 300 international IP strategist list, and the first to be recognized consecutively for five years. Her expertise has been acknowledged by Managing IP magazine, which named her an Expert of Experts in IP strategy, while LexisNexis honoured her with their Client Choice award. She is recognized as an IAM top 300 Global IP leader and has received numerous international accolades for her patent work.

Kate's reputation as an IP educator is well-established on both the international and local stages. She was invited to address Vienna’s ASTP conference—an association of European Science and Technology Transfer Professionals—after her paper on brainstorming garnered attention from the prestigious organization. In New Zealand, she conducts workshops and seminars for businesses and educational institutions alike. She also initiated and edited the book The Inventor’s Guide to Success.
